Frank Stella (1936 - ) is an American abstract-expressionist artist. He started as a painter but in the late 1960s began experimenting with printmaking techniques. Richard H. Axsom best described Stella's work when he wrote in The Prints of Frank Stella 1967-1982:
York Factory II has qualities quite different from the playful hedonism and more immediate sensual appeal of other screenprints. Printed in deep-toned hues on back Arches paper, it is enigmatic, almost brooding, in expression . . . . it indicates an important new direction in Stella's printmaking strategies.
